A Cappella and Burlesque
This class aims to examine the potential of a cappella as a performance platform. Using burlesque as an example, we will discuss ways to integrate new ideas into a cappella performance that challenge our expectations and intensify the intent of our music. While we have continued to push the boundaries of sound in a cappella, we tend to conform to the status quo when it comes to movement. Is it possible to push the physical interpretation of our music beyond formation changes and synchronized arm gestures? What can we learn from the way burlesque performers interpret and select music? Let’s find out!

Comfort Zone Crushers
This class is a hands on workshop about breaking out of comfort zones as a performer to unleash the raw emotion and power of performance. We will start with a group comfort zone breaking challenge with everyone standing up and giving their most primal battle cry and unleashing their inner she(or he)wolf. Once we have broken down barriers as a group, we will break down our own individual barriers. We will list all of the things that scare us about performing like our voices cracking, someone making fun of our dance moves, looking at the audience, singing a note so loud that we stick out and tackle them one by one. I will end the class with a challenge and quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, "Do one thing every day that scares you." Constantly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is the only way to improve as a performer.

Chord Balancing with Love Notes
Barbershop is built on specific chords and singers often talk about Pythagorean tuning in order to make those chords ring, but people often ask how to apply Pythagorean tuning when they sing. We will talk about two different ways to apply Pythagorean tuning, but mainly focus on teaching how to balance single chords to really make them lock and ring. We will also demonstrate the use of Pythagorean tuning in action!

Gender vs. Sex
This class is meant to challenge and strengthen our ideas on gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, intersectionality, and what feminism in general has to do with a cappella. We will tackle big questions in big ways. Things like: "Why have sex-specific groups at all?", "What IS gender?", “How does the social climate inform our musical decisions?”, “Can I be super sexy on stage and still be feminist?”, etc. Open minds and respect for one another a must. For ALL gender identities, backgrounds, and opinions.

Step Out of The Box
I will talk about figuring out to work with what you have. A little can go a long way. Attention to detail is important. Make sure you know your theme and emotion for the set. Where do you want your group to go with your set? Are you telling a story? Are you happy? Sad? Angry? Heart broken? Just know what you want to evoke on stage with your music and of course your movement. Make sure all members feel comfortable while learning. Know your group dynamic (style) and notice what choreo will work effectively for them. Visuals are always important.
